My Writing

My fiction is primarily, but not exclusively, speculative. I love exploring relationships, particularly between children and parents, and humans and the natural world.

I'm currently working on a post-apocalyptic novel (working title Behind the Sky) and putting together a collection of short stories and flash fiction. Under the title The Jellyfish Room, a version of this collection was shortlisted for the Ellipsis Zine Flash Collection Competition in 2020.

Me

I grew up in a village in North Yorkshire and now live in Sheffield. I spent most of my childhood with my nose in a book, studied physics at university, and started a PhD in elementary particle theory before leaving to become a freelance writer and editor. I still do content writing to pay the bills alongside writing fiction.

I am a first reader at Flash Fiction Online. I feel privileged to be a part of this team. Learning what to look for in the submissions we receive has taught me a lot about writing.

When I'm not staring at a screen, notebook, or book, you can find me running barefoot around the streets of Sheffield, hiking in the Peak District, dancing blues or lindyhop, or browsing the shelves at the library.

Pronouns

I prefer they/them. If you find that too awkward, he/him is also fine. I also go by Nathan, although to date I haven't published anything under that name. I am a work in progress.
